InnoWind Featured as Satellite Data Gains Importance in University of Vaasa Seminar
Kvarken Space Center's first-ever seminar at the University of Vaasa in May put InnoWind in the spotlight, showcasing how satellite data is reshaping wind-power development and Finland's green transition.

InnoWind
was in the spotlight as Kvarken Space Center hosted its first seminar at the
University of Vaasa in early May, bringing together researchers, students and
industry representatives to discuss the fast‑growing role of satellite data. The event highlighted how space‑based Earth observation is becoming an essential part of everyday
solutions in energy systems, environmental monitoring and decision‑making.
Speakers
emphasized that satellite data is no longer distant or purely technical. It is
increasingly used in practical applications across the region, supported by
several research and development projects within the Kvarken Space Center
network. Among these, InnoWind drew particular attention for its work on
applying satellite data to wind‑power development. The project
explores how Earth observation can support environmental assessments,
operational planning and sustainability reporting for wind farms, strengthening
Finland’s green transition.
The seminar
also covered the EU’s Copernicus program, new space‑related study programs at the university, and the revived ambition to
develop the KvarkenSat satellite. Several ongoing projects were presented,
including AuroraSpace, SpaceEconomy, Nordic Energy Capital, TRUST and research
linked to the WSTAR data center. Together, they illustrate how broadly space
data is being used to drive innovation and new business opportunities in
Ostrobothnia.
The
dialogue around space data and the regional space economy will continue later
this year at Wasa Future Festival’s Space Wednesday in August and at Kvarken
Space Center’s network event in November, where companies, policymakers and
researchers are expected to further strengthen collaboration — with InnoWind
continuing to play a key role in satellite‑enabled renewable‑energy development.
